On Easter Saturday, I rescued a cute little cat family that was living at the school that I teach at. You can read about their rescue here. It has been almost a month and I thought I would give you a cat rescue update on where this little cat family is now and how they are doing.
Easter & Toby’s Cat Rescue
There was 2 weeks between when I trapped Easter & Toby and when they were going to be able to go through our clinic at Feral Cat Assistance Program. I had to house these 2 cats in huge dog crates for that time. Toby was what I would call semi-feral. He very rarely hissed at me. He would eat a Churu cat treat from me, sometimes even licking it off my finger. I felt that with some time and patience, Toby could be tamed and not have to go back out in the wild.
Easter, however, was a completely different story. She was pretty feral. She hissed and growled and sometimes, she would even lunge at me when I tended to her needs. I had a carrier in her crate and was able to lock her in the carrier while I cleaned her crate and litter box. It was quickly realized that I was not going to be able to tame Easter. She would definitely need to be released back to her home at the school.
Clinic Day
Both cats were fixed and vaccinated at our monthly clinic. It was discovered that Easter was pregnant again. Her current kittens were only 6 weeks old, and she was pregnant again. Unfortunately, cats don’t use birth control, and this is why TNR is so very important and necessary. Easter’s pregnancy was terminated and she would need to spend a extra day inside due to receiving fluids. I still needed to make a decision about their release.
I found myself at a crossroads. If I was going to release Easter, did I want to release her alone. Or did I want to stop my taming efforts with Toby and release him back with Easter? By releasing them together, they would have company with each other. After much going back and forth with this dilemma, I decided to release them back to the school together. I am now their caretaker, providing them with daily food and water. Cat rescue looks different in every situation.
Cactus & Lily’s Cat Rescue
Easter’s 2 kittens, Cactus & Lily, have been doing so well. Lily has, finally, stopped hissing at me. They both purr as soon as they see me. They love snuggles and kisses. Playing in their pop-up playpen is a favorite activity. They love to watch TV and, of course, eat.
It will be a month before they are ready for adoption. In that time, they will receive their kitten vaccines and will be spayed at our next clinic. I will provide them with all the love and care that is needed for a kitten to develop into a well-adjusted young cat. It is always difficult to let these precious kittens move on to their forever homes, but it is necessary in order for me to be able to give a new set of kittens a 2nd chance on life. Cat rescue never stops.
