Kracken Kitties

Read about the Resident kitties, Cat House kitties, and Panda.

Welcome back! In Meet the Clowder – Part 1, we met the Resident Kitties. Emmet and Prudence, 2 of the Resident Kitties, were once Kracken Kitties before they upgraded to Resident Kitty status due to health issues. Today, we will meet the rest of the Kracken Kitties. 6 precious black kitties that I rescued.

Kracken Babies

The Kracken Kitties are 6 black kitties who were born in April of 2008. They were, originally, 11 kittens born to the 2 mommies of the colony that I cared for on the same day within an hour a part. Once the kittens were old enough to be separated from their moms, I scooped them up and moved them into my bonus room.

All with the intentions of adopting them out. I spent hours with them to make sure that they were completely socialized and sweet and friendly. I gave them cool names and even created little “dating” posts for them on Facebook, like Snape lives by the motto of Mischief Managed. Through it all, only 2 were adopted. Unfortunately, there is still a stigma against black cats, and I witnessed this firsthand. But that is a topic for another time.

So, that left me with 9 black kitties living in my bonus room. Every evening, I would open the door to the bonus room to let them come down and play with my resident cats. Opening the door to the bonus room and all of them jumping out over the baby gate (used to keep them in when going for feedings and such) was like releasing the Kracken. And so, they became the Kracken Kitties.

Unfortunately, Captain Flint passed away from FIP (Feline Infectious Peritonitis) (there will be an article about this deadly disease coming soon) a day before his 1st birthday. Shortly after, Emmet started showing symptoms of the same disease and he became a Resident Kitty. About 4 months ago, Prudence was showing signs of stress from being bullied by her siblings, so she became the newest member of the Resident Kitties. And then there were 6…

Snape

Black cats are mysterious.
Snape looking for mischief.

Professor Snape – we all know where his name came from. Hopefully. One of the biggest Kracken Kitties. This big goofball is always into mischief, and it is always managed. He LOVES for his belly to be rub and will make little air biscuits to show his approval. He is also the most vocal of the kitties. Always has something to tell me or complain about, especially during feedings.

Zazzles

Most black cats are males.
Zazzles like to assist with writing.

Zazzy Zazzles – the other big boy. Originally, thought as a girl being that he the only kitten that I had sexed wrong when making their kitty vet appointment. His name at first was Sassy Socks because he had these little white hairs that ran up and down his legs like little Sassy Socks. However, after finding out about his sex change, we changed his name to Zazzles. Fans of The Big Bang Theory will understand his name. Zazzles is very much like a dog. He follows me around. Sits at my feet when I stop. Will stay and come on command. But he is also the bully. He used to bully one of the resident kitties and was the one bullying Prudence. He is as sweet as he can be to me and other humans. Not so much to cats that he sees as weak and inferior.

Pyewacket

Black cats are often associated with witchcraft.
Pyewacket is a handsome familiar.

Purrfect Pyewacket – a shy boy whose name came from 2 different places. The name is one of the familiars of an alleged witch in England. It also, the name of the familiar in the 1958 movie Bell, Book & Candle with Kim Novack and Jimmy Stewart. Pyewacket is a quiet boy who does not like to be in the middle of things. He would rather sit on the outskirt and observe what is going on. He does love to curl up in my lap for snuggles.

Mr. Mistoffelees

Black cats are associated with Halloween.
Mr. Mistoffelees is the Cats meow!

Mr. Mistoffelees – it shouldn’t be a surprise that Cats the Musical is a favorite of mine. Had to give one of these babies a name from the musical. I call him Stoffelees for short. Sweet Stoffelees is the other quiet boy. He is usually sleeping away from the others. However, he not only absolutely loves me, but he also even loves my husband. He will follow him around. Stoffelees loves wand toys and chasing the red dot. One of these days he will catch it. I have faith in him.

Agatha

Black cats may have some white on their chests.
Agatha is on the hunt for a mystery.

Ms. Agatha – one of the only 2 females of the Kracken Kitties and a Tom Boy. She would much rather wrestle with her brothers than snuggle. And she wins most of the time. As a kitten, she loved to watch British Crime shows. I am not kidding. She would curl up beside me and watch Poirot episodes. And so, she became Agatha. Agatha is the 1st to greet new people. Not sure if she is welcoming or judging, but she will greet you.

Bromhilda

Black cats can be very photogenic.
Bromhilda is a wide-eyed witchy kitty.

Witchy Bromhilda – is the other female of the Kracken Kitties. She is the sweetest cat with big, beautiful eyes. Fans of old Bugs Bunny cartoons should recognize her name as the witch that tried to boil Bugs. My Bromhilda is a gentle soul with a soft meow. However, she will definitely put her brothers into place if they try getting rough with her. She loves toys that she can bunny kick. Have to keep those legs in shape.

So, those are the Kracken Kitties. I used to pick that I wanted to start a Black Cat Sanctuary. Be careful what you put out into the Universe. I hate that I couldn’t find homes for these babies. Although, I couldn’t imagine my life without my Kracken. They have brought so much joy and happiness to my life. And I am grateful that I was able to give these black kitties a good home, instead of them living on the streets.
