I have had cats who drooled before and unfortunately, it did mean that they had some dental issues happening. So, when I first noticed Lily drooling, I had a little freak out and we went straight to the vet. Luckily, Lily had no dental issues. However, she continued to drool. Not a constant drool, but she did have moments when she would drool quite a bit. It was very concerning for me. So, I did what I do best. I started researching reasons why she would be drooling. I was very happy with what I found out. So much that I almost started to drool myself, lol. Drooling is a sign of happiness!
A Very Happy Kitty
With everything that I read, unless there is a medical reason, drooling is a sign of utter happiness. Some cats will drool when they are very happy and content. It, apparently, brings them back to a time when they were kittens nursing on their mommies. Some say that when a cat drools as they are purring and kneading (making biscuits), that they get so caught up in the feelings of happiness that they forget to swallow. Thus, drooling commences. The amount of drool will vary depending on the cat. Lily starts off with small drops of drool. Then, as she gets into the deep state of euphoria, her drool drops become bigger.
Another reason for a cat to drool goes back to remembering their time as a kitten. When a kitten was getting ready to nurse their mom for their next meal, the saliva in their mouth would start to build up. This saliva is necessary during mealtime. Some experts say that drooling is a buildup of saliva. That your drooling cat is happily remembering a safe mealtime from their kittenhood. Lily’s drooling doesn’t necessarily come at mealtime. Although, I haven’t really paid attention to see if she does drool when I am fixing her meal. It now makes me wonder. I will have to pay attention the next time she is weaving in and out of my legs as I am fixing her plate.
Just Another Reason to Love My LilyBell
So, as if I needed another reason to absolutely love my LilyBell, the fact that she reaches a level of extreme happiness that causes her to drool brings me immense joy. She is one of my Joybringers. Always managing to put a smile on my face no matter what I am dealing with. I absolutely love the fact that apparently, I bring her joy and happiness as well. So much so that she cannot contain her saliva. If you have a cat who drools, please make sure that it is not a health-related issue. If not, revel in the fact that your drooling cat is so utterly happy and feels completely safe and comfortable with you.
