5 Reasons You Should Own a Black Cat

Black cats typically have a bad reputation. Stigmas and superstitions surround them. A lot of people consider them to be bad luck, tying them to evil and witchcraft. However, in a lot of countries, black cats are a symbol of good luck and fortune. In addition, a lot of famous cats from TV and movies are black, like Sylvester, Salem and Binx.

Because of the stigma that tends to follow black cats, they are usually the least likely to be adopted. That makes me sad. As a cat mom of 16 black cats, I can testify that black cats are not bad luck. They are sweet, affectionate and very funny. You can read about my clowders of 16 black cats here, here and here.

In an effort to debunk the bad myths about black cats, I present you with 5 Reasons You Should Own a Black Cat.

Some of my beautiful black cats.

1. Black Goes With Everything

Your black cat will match your outfits and your decor. Black is a complimentary color. It is very slimming. It goes well against most color palettes.

2. Their Eye Color Looks Amazing Against Their Black Fur

Black cats typically have green, yellow or copper eyes. Sometimes, you will run across a black cat who has kept its kitten blue eyes. No matter what the eye color is, it will be absolutely beautiful. Most of my black cats have green or yellow eyes. Hemingway, however, has the most beautiful copper eyes. They are truly mesmerizing.

3. They Are Little Ninjas

Having black fur allows the black cat to hid in the shadows. This helps them to survive outside and away from predators. It also gives them the appearance of little 4-legged ninjas.

4. They Add to Your Halloween Decor

If you are a lover of all things Halloween, then a black cat is for you. What could be better than having a living Halloween decoration for your home?

5. Finally, You Get to Be OWNED By a Mini Panther

Most of us cat lovers are also lovers of the big cats. Because we cherish our lives, we will never be able to own, or even pet, big cats. Owning a black cat gives you the opportunity to own, or be owned, by a mini panther and still keep your life.

Parting Thoughts

I hope these reasons have helped you see what you are missing out by not bringing a black cat into your home. The next time you are thinking about adopting a new furbaby, please don’t overlook the black cats. I promise, you won’t regret it.
