The Dangers of Easter Lilies

I did a blog about Spring Toxic Products a couple of weeks ago and briefly talked about the dangers of Easter Lilies. With Easter just a few days away, I really wanted to drive the point home about why Easter Lilies are so very dangerous to have around our cats. While this may be a beautiful and fragrant symbol of Easter, it is also extremely toxic to cats.

All parts of the flower can be poisonous to cats. Just a small bite of the petal, stem or leaves can lead to death. Even the pollen from the flower can be toxic to your cat. Consumption of the plant can lead to horrible digestive upsets and, if left untreated, kidney failure and death. If your cat has been exposed, you will notice vomiting and lethargy within a few hours. Within 24 hours, you will notice an increase in thirst but a decrease in urination. This decrease signifies the start of kidney failure.

Time is of the essence. If you suspect that your cat has been exposed to Easter Lilies and is demonstrating any of the symptoms, get them to the vet immediately. If treatment is provided within 6 hours, your cat will have a good chance of surviving. After that, prognosis is not as hopeful. You can contact ASPCA Animal Poison Control.

So, this Easter season, play it safe and do not bring an Easter Lily into your home. If you have to have the iconic Easter symbol, go fake. It may not be the same, but it is the safest alternative for your cat. Hope everyone has a Happy Easter!
