Keep Your Cats Calm During Fireworks

4th of July – Independence Day of USA. Cute cat with sunglasses and American flag on dark background with fireworks

Most of the time, when it comes to fireworks, we are concerned about the dogs in our life. We hear horror stories about dogs escaping, running from the loud sounds of fireworks and getting lost. We find products like the thunder shirt that helps calm dogs during fireworks and thunderstorms. But, what about our cats. It is scientifically proven that cats have some of the best hearing among our domestic animals. I mean they can hear their prey from a distance, being able to decipher size and other factors needed to successfully hunt.

So, why would we not think that the very loud booms and bangs of fireworks would not affect our cats and cause them distress? The celebration of our Independence can make our poor cats feel like a prisoner in a war zone. There are ways that we can make this time of year less distressing for our babies. After all, it is our responsibility to provide them with a safe and calm space.

Ways To Keep Your Cats Calm

  • Cat Calm – I have been using Cat Calm from The-Two-Crazy-Cat-Ladies for years now. A bowl of fresh water with Cat Calm added for my cats is always available. This amazing product is guaranteed to reduce stress and anxiety in cats within 24 hours. With 80 herbs, 21 minerals and 7 exotic plant extracts, Cat Calm is a safe and chemical way to reduce stress and anxiety in your cats during the 4th of July or any other time.
  • Provide Your Cat with A Safe Space – This is the most important thing you can do for your cat. Providing them with a place to hide and feel secure will help your cats more than any other thing you do. I am sure that your cat already has a place that they frequent. Make sure that this place is easily accessible. Don’t lock them in a room. You may think this will help, but, in fact, it could cause more stress especially if they are not normally locked up. Also, be sure to check any escape routes. Even if your cat normally does not try to get out, a stressed cat may try to get away from the noise and escape.

  • Provide a Noise Distraction – Turn on the TV or radio. A lot of cat parents leave the TV or radio playing for their cats when they leave the house anyways. This is definitely a time to provide a noise distraction. A quick Google search for Cat TV will provide you with lots of choices for your babies viewing pleasure. I play Calming Music for my foster kittens at night. Be sure to turn the volume up so that it helps to drown out the noise of the fireworks.
  • Use Herbal Remedies – I have been using Herb Gardens from Naturally Cats for a few months now. It has been amazing to watch the process of self-selection. Catnip, Chamomile and Calendula have natural calming effects on cats. An herb garden down with a good pinch of these herbs will help keep your cat calm during celebrations.

  • Keep Curtains and Blinds Closed – This is especially important if you live near where the bright lights of the fireworks can be seen from your house. Not only can the loud noise from the fireworks be stressful for your cats, but the bright flashes of lights can also equally be disorienting for them. Blocking the lights from them can help ease their stress and anxiety.
  • New Toy or Treats – If your cat loves toys or treats, this is the perfect time to buy them something new. A new toy, especially one with catnip, will help to keep them occupied during loud celebrations. Some tasty treats hidden around their area can also be a welcomed distraction. You can even use a treat puzzle to really engage them.

  • Stay Home – Finally, think about staying home with your babies. It is can definitely be fun for us to go watch fireworks. However, we can have just as much fun staying in with our cats and engaging them with some meaningful playtime to keep them distracted. If you are going out, please consider providing your cats with some, if not all, of the above ways to help keep your cat calm.

A Stress-Free 4th of July

With 19 cats and 2 kittens, my hands are full making sure everyone is going to be stress free this 4th of July. I always have music playing for the Kracken Kitties and the Cat House Cats. I will turn up the volume for them. The TV is always on during the day for the foster kittens. Their volume will also increase as well as closing their blinds. All the cats have been receiving Cat Calm in their water. All cats will have some calming herbs placed down to help them soothe any stress and anxiety they have. I have new toys and treats ready to give them. I am prepared to provide my cats with a stress-free 4th of July.

“The only thing a cat worries about is what’s happening right now. As we tell the kittens, you can only wash one paw at a time.”
